5th Grade, Module 19: What is Algebra?
Algebra is a branch of study in mathematics that deals with relations and operations. We know that a mathematical expression uses mathematical symbols instead of words. For example, the words ‘twenty-eight increased by five’, will be shown as the mathematical expression 28 + 5. If we say there were some people at a party and 7 people left, can you give the mathematical expressions for these words? We can do so with the help of algebra.
In grade 5, this chapter, we will come to know the introductory level concepts of algebra. Namely variable, constant, coefficients and like and unlike terms. We will also learn the arithmetic operations with variables and how to find the value of the algebraic expressions and how we can simplify it.
