How is Time Related to Math?

 

We often use the following phrases- 

  • classroom time table 

  • break time 

  • time of each period 

  • time to go to school 

  • school over time 

  • time to sleep 

  • time to go to play 

The common thing that we can see here is the word ‘time’. Let us learn more about the application of time. 

 

We already know, various conversion factors from days to hours and then hours to minutes. It can be summarized by the table below shows the conversion from bigger UOM to smaller UOM. 

 

 

24 Hour clock time 

We normally use 12-hour clock system in which the hour hand of the clock moves clockwise (circular motion towards right) twice a day (24 hours). Some departments like railways, airlines, etc. use 24-hour clock system because they do not use a.m. and p.m. 

A day has 24 hours. The time in a 12-hour clock is divided between two periods. 

  • 12 midnight to 12 noon 

  • 12 noon to 12 midnight 

Ante Meridiem or a.m. 

The time between 12 midnight to 12 noon. 

Post Meridiem or p.m. 

The time between 12 noon to 12 midnight. 

 

To get the 24-hour clock time, we add 12 to the time in pm. 

 

 

 

 

 

Fun Fact 

10! seconds is exactly 6 weeks.  

10! means 10 factorial.  

10! = 10 × 9 × 8 × 7 × 6 × 5 × 4 × 3 × 2 × 1 = 3628800 seconds. Which is 42 days, or  
6 weeks, exactly. 

 

Conversion of higher units into lower units 

 

  • 13 hours into minutes 

Solution 

1 hour = 60 minutes 

13 hours = 13 × 60 minutes 

  = 780 minutes 

 

  • 6 hours 20 minutes 

Solution 

1 hour = 60 minutes 

6 hours = 6 × 60 minutes 

= 360 minutes 

6 hours 20 minutes = 360 + 20 = 380 minutes 

 

  •  15 minutes into seconds 

  1 minute = 60 seconds 

 15 minutes = 15 × 60 seconds 

      = 900 seconds 

 

  • 9 minutes 35 seconds into seconds 

1 minute = 60 seconds 

9 minutes = 9 × 60 seconds 

      = 540 seconds 

9 minutes 35 seconds = 540 + 35 = 575 seconds 

 

  • 7 days into hours 

1 Day = 24 hours 

7 Days = 7 × 24 = 168 hours 

 

  • 15 days 17 hours into hours 

1 day = 24 hours 

15 days = 15 × 24 = 360 hours 

  1.  days 17 hours = 360 + 17 = 377 hours 

 

 

  • 8 weeks 5 days into days 

1 week = 7 days 

8 weeks = 8 × 7 = 56 days 

8 weeks 5 days = 56 + 5 days = 61 days  

 

Conversion of lower units into higher units 

 

Let us understand through example- 

 

  • Convert 240 seconds into minutes 

               60 seconds = 1 minute 

 

               Therefore, 240 seconds = 240 ÷ 60 = 4 minutes 

 

  • Convert 145 hrs into days and hours 

               24 hours = 1 day 

               Therefore, 145 hrs = 145 ÷ 24 hours 

 

 

 

      = 6 days 1 hour 

 

  • Convert 54 minutes into hours. 

We know, 60 minutes = 1 hour 

or, 1 minute = 1/60 hour 

Therefore, 54 minutes = 54/60 hour = 9/10 hours 

 

  • Converts 800 hours into days. 

24 hours = 1 day 

Therefore, 800 hours    = 800 ÷ 24 days

We have seen time is used in our practical life on everyday basis.  

 

Let us look at a few examples to demonstrate operations on time and its use in real life. 

 

Examples 

  • Rose is 12 years 6 months old and Patty is 12 years 8 months old. What is their total age?  

 

Solution:  

Rose's age                 =12 years  6 months 

 

Patty's age                 = 12 years  8 months 

 

Total of their ages      = 24 years 14 months 

                                = 24 years 1 year 2 months 

= 25 years 2 months 

 

 

  • Victor left for school at 7:45 a.m. He came back home at 2:30 p.m. Find the difference in time between his leaving and coming home.  

 

 

Solution: 

.(i) 7:45 a.m. = 07:45 (24-hour clock time)  

2:30 p.m. = 14:30 (24-hour clock time)  

Difference 14:30 - 07:45 

= 6:45, i.e., 6 hours 45 minutes 

(ii) Time from 7:45 a.m. to noon = 12 - 7:45 = 4 hours 15 m 

Time from 12 noon to 2:30 p.m. = 2 hour 30 minutes 

Therefore, total time taken = 4 hours 15 minutes +  
2 hour 30 minutes = 6 hours 45 minutes 

 

  • Shiva Ganga Express started from Varanasi at 18:45 hours and reached New Delhi at 07:15 hours next day. How long has it taken to cover the distance from Varanasi to New Delhi?  

 

Solution: 

 

Time taken from 18:45 to 24 midnight = 5 hours 15 minutes 

 

Time taken from 24 midnight to 07:15 = 7 hours 15 minutes 

 

Total time taken = 5 hours 15 minutes + 7 hours 15 minutes = 12 hours 30 minutes 

 

 

Fun Facts 

 

  • Earlier people used burning candles, sunlight or dripping water or sifting sand to measure time. 

  • Time does not tick at the same rate in every part of the universe. 

  • It ticks faster on Mount Everest than it does in the Death Valley. A year goes by 15 microseconds faster at the top of Mount Everest than it does at sea level. 

  • It actually takes 23 hours 56min 4.2 secs for earth to rotate once.
