What are Measurements of Capacity?

Measurement of Capacity

The maximum amount that something can hold is called it’scapacity.

The standard unit of capacity is litre.

Millilitre, centilitre, decilitre are smaller unit used to measure smaller capacity, litre is commonly used to measure capacity, whereas units like decalitre, hectolitre and kilolitre are used to measure larger capacity. All these units are related to each other.

Let us look at the capacity conversion chart-

According to the capacity conversion charts, units of capacities and their equivalents are:

  • 1 kilolitre (kl) = 10 Hectolitres (hl) = 1000 l

  • 1 Hectolitre (hl) = 10 Decalitres (dal) = 100 l

  • 1 Decalitre (dal) = 10 Litres (l)

  • 1 Litre (l) = 10 Decilitres (dl) = 100 cl = 1000 ml

  • 1 Decilitre (dl) = 10 Centilitres (cl)

  • 1 Decilitre = 0.1 Litre

  • 1 Centilitre (cl) = 10 Millilitres (ml)

  • 1 Centilitre = 0.01 Litre

  • 1 Millilitre = 0.001 Litre

Conversion

While converting from a larger unit to a smaller unit, we multiply

Example 1:    kl l

                    1 kl = 1000 l

                    Therefore, 3.1 kl = 3 x 1000 = 3100 l

Example 2:    l ml

                    1 l = 1000 ml

                    Therefore, 4 l = 4 x 1000 = 4000 ml

While converting from a smaller unit to a larger unit, we divide

Example 1:    l kl

                    1 l = 1/1000 kl

                    Therefore, 10 l = 10/1000 kl = 0.010 kl

Example 2:    ml l

                    1 ml = 1/1000 l

                    Therefore, 3 ml = 3/1000 l = 0.003 l

Addition of Metric Measures Metric measures are added in the same way as we add whole numbers or decimals. We arrange the digits in columns as per their unit and then add as required. Let us consider an example. Example- Add 4 km 9 hm 3 m 5 cm, 3 km ...
