The Indian Place Value System
Using the same concepts as we had learned in the introduction, the Indian Place Value System is also a Base -10 number system, with following key rules:
We start grouping the number from the right, first in group of 3 and then further in groups of 2.
Starting from the right, the first period is ones, consisting of three place values i.e. ones, tens and hundreds.
The next period is thousands, consisting of two places i.e. thousands and ten-thousands.
The third period is lakhs consisting of two places i.e. lakhs and ten-lakhs and then crores and so on.
Reading and writing a number
While reading a number per the Indian number system, all of the digits in the same period are read together and the name of the period (except the ones) is read along with them.
While writing a number per the Indian system, we put a comma after every period to separate the period to make it easier to read.
Example 1: Write the following in words:
67,248 (b) 34,79,831 (c) 5,81,45,063
Solution: Let us arrange the digits in Indian place value chart as follows and then simply write them using the grouping of periods and the respective location of each digit in a group.
67, 248 = Sixty-seven thousand two hundred forty-eight
34,79,831 = Thirty-four lakh seventy-nine thousand eight hundred thirty one
5,81,45,063 = Five crores eighty-one lakh forty five thousand sixty three
Example 2: Write the following in figures:
Seventy crores thirty-eight lakh twenty seven thousand four hundred fifty six
Nineteen thousand fifty
Four lakh thirty eight thousand nine hundred twenty five
Solution: Let us make the Indian place value chart and write the digits in the respective places from the number name.
The required number is-
70,38,27,456
19,050
4,38,925
Place Value as per Indian Place Value System
Let us see the place value of all digits in the number 6,14,92,487 as per Indian Place Value System
The above figure shows the place value of the number as per Indian Place Value System. The only difference in International Place Value system would be how the number and its place value is read. But the actual numerical value remains the same.
Comparison between Indian & International Place Value System
The major difference between two systems of breaking up numbers is the position of placing commas for grouping numbers into periods.
Key Difference 1:
In Indian number system: we start grouping the number from right first in group of 3 and further in groups of 2
BUT in International system, we start grouping the number from right in group of 3 called period.
Key Difference 2:
In Indian number system: We use terms like ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, lakhs and crores
BUT in International system, we use terms like ones, hundreds, thousands, millions and so on.
Let us look at the table below to compare the two systems:
We can observe from the table that:
10 lakhs = 1 million
1 crore = 10 millions
10 Crores = 100 millions
Did you know??
Zero was invented by Aryabhata. India invented the Number System.
The place value system and the decimal system were developed in India in 100 BC.
The largest numbers used by the Greeks and the Romans were 10^6 whereas Hindus used numbers as big as 10^53 with specific names as early as 5000 BC during the Vedic period.
